Winter Camping

If you are planning to stay in your RV during the winter and do not have heated water tanks, an artic package & covered underbelly, make sure you winterize your RV first. You would not want to fill up those tanks next spring and find leaks everywhere!

Since I do not have an arctic package, I do not use my water when I venture out in the winter. I know it sounds like I am really ruffing it, but it is not too bad. I carry water along with me and once you have a routine, it is not bad. Many shower rooms are still available and seldom crowded.

You do, however, need to be aware of weather systems, campground closings and road conditions. I always call the day before a trip just to make sure there are no problems. Since I camp in state parks without cell service, I carry an emergency radio to keep up with weather reports.

Winter can be such a beautiful time of year. It is an exciting time to hike and enjoy the camping experience without the crowds. And you just cannot beat how it feels snuggled up in your chair by the campfire wrapped up in a blanket, with the beverage of your choice. A rechargeable heated blanket never hurts either!

For winter camping, I sometimes download a couple of movies before I leave home. I also take a book or play games on my iPad in the evenings when it gets dark earlier. I tend to cook inside my RV when it is cold outside.

Rain can put a damper on your plans, because let’s face it, cold rain is no fun. Many campgrounds offer rain insurance now. It is inexpensive and is worth it in the winter.

You also need to know if your heating system can keep you warm. I would experiment at home before heading out in the cold. Not all RVs are created equal. Insulation, construction, windows, and different heating systems all vary.

Make sure you have extra propane, batteries, fuses, and plenty of gas in your vehicle just in case of emergencies. I keep a small electric heater, wool blanket, and an emergency blanket in my camper as well. Plan for the best but prepare for the worst!

Please leave any suggestions you have for a good USB heated blanket. I am shopping for one.

Happy Camping & Stay Warm!
